Protein production

Protein production is a cornerstone of modern biotechnology, enabling the generation of recombinant proteins, antibodies, enzymes, vaccines, and other biologics for research, drug discovery, and bio-manufacturing applications.

Efficient production workflows rely on the delivery of genetic material that instructs cells to synthesize the protein of interest, most commonly in the form of plasmid DNA (pDNA) or messenger RNA (mRNA). While both approaches ultimately drive protein expression, they differ in their kinetics and applications. mRNA enables rapid, transient protein production directly from the cytoplasm, making it particularly attractive for short-term expression studies and cell engineering applications.

In contrast, pDNA provides longer-lasting expression and can be used for both transient protein production and the generation of stable cell lines for sustained, large-scale manufacturing.

Overcoming Intracellular Delivery Challenges with LumiPore®

Regardless of the expression strategy, intracellular delivery remains a critical determinant of protein yield and process efficiency. For pDNA, delivery to both the cytoplasm and nucleus can be challenging, particularly in hard-to-transfect cells, while mRNA delivery is often limited by inefficient intracellular trafficking and cytosolic access.

The LumiPore® platform addresses these challenges through a gentle photoporation mechanism that enables efficient delivery of both mRNA and pDNA while preserving cell viability, proliferation, and functionality.

Its scalability across culture formats and compatibility with suspension systems such as HEK293 and CHO make LumiPore particularly well suited for applications ranging from rapid transient protein expression to stable cell line development and large-scale protein production workflows.
